In our old house I had huge plans for this awesome office space. I was in the middle of building a huge L shaped desk for it when we had to sell the house. Sadly, we didn't have anywhere for the desk as the measurements were custom to the old house so we ended up... throwing it out. In hindsight, I wish I would have kept the wood... It truly broke my heart to see it driven off to the dump. Okay back to the office and the file cabinets...
My initial vision had been to make a desk using file cabinets, so I found a couple on my local yard sale page and picked them up. Well, then my vision changed and I wanted to make the desk from wood by hand. So I was left with two outdated file cabinets. Yuck. What was I supposed to do with them now? I posted one for free on my local yard sale... I had a plan for the other one.
First I washed it all down. I sprayed the inside and outside. Unfortunately I don't have a true before photo... Let's just say it wasn't so pretty.
Wiped it down with soapy dish soap water. Then I let it dry. I sanded it so that it was a little roughed up. I took off all the hardware I could and taped up what I couldn't remove. I painted a layer of primer on it first. I really wanted to make sure the top coat would stick.
Then I spray painted it dark navy. I used Rust oleum Midnight Blue Ultra.
I gave it a solid couple coats. The overspray was ridiculous! But I love the color it turned out to be. It evened out as it dried. Then I sprayed all the hardware gold and added "feet". I had some extra wood furniture feet I had taken off a storage cube a long time ago. I sprayed them gold as well. Then I moved it into our office.
But since we sold our home and I wasn't sure where to put this since we didn't know where we were headed yet, I sold it to a friend of mine. But I thought the transformation was pretty cool.
This project was a lot of fun to transform this old ugly file cabinet. Looking forwards to more fun things I can transform!
